1.2 million applications: The number of applications for regularization is nearing a record high as the deadline approaches

The deadline to apply for the extraordinary regularization of migrants in Spain closes this Tuesday, and the numbers have already exceeded even the most optimistic projections. According to the latest figures, applications have surpassed 1.2 million, whereas the government had expected around half a million.

As is often the case, reality is outpacing expectations. The Unified Police Union, which is processing the applications, puts the number at 1.25 million. That’s more than double the original estimate, and now those applications will have to be processed. And that’s not all: the process doesn’t end here.

Pedro Sánchez has described this process as historic. This Tuesday, he will preside over an event on the matter. In his remarks, he has emphasized that regularization recognizes rights and responsibilities, and he has highlighted the support of the Church and business leaders. He has also had to defend himself against external criticism, such as that from Giorgia Meloni in Brussels.

But it hasn’t all been easy. Many applicants have run into bureaucratic hurdles. At first, the vulnerability certificate was a major hurdle; later, for nationals of countries such as Algeria, Cuba, Guinea-Conakry, and The Gambia, it was the criminal record check. For this reason, the “Regularización Ya” platform has requested an extension, with the backing of Sumar and Podemos.

Meanwhile, CCOO, as a collaborating organization, has submitted more than 7,500 applications, most of them from Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. Nearly half are from women. The confederal secretary for Migration, Sofía Castillo, has reiterated that they will continue to support migrants in training and the recognition of their credentials.

The Unified Police Union is already warning that the most complicated part is yet to come: issuing identity cards (TIE), taking fingerprints, and resolving issues… They are calling for more resources and better planning. Applicants will have to wait patiently. If you’re having trouble with your appointment or application, message us on Telegram.
