2023 Income Tax: Schedule an appointment with the Tax Office starting June 1

If you haven’t filed your income tax return yet and would prefer to get help in person, take note: starting June 1, you can make an appointment at the tax office. That’s what the agency has said—don’t be surprised; they always do it this way—and it’s setting up this system to assist those who need in-person help.

And who has to file? Well, all tax residents in Spain—note this—including foreigners who live here for more than 183 days a year. If you’ve worked, run a business, rented out a property, or received government assistance, you’ll most likely have to file your income tax return. The 2023 filing season began on April 3 and ends on July 1, so you still have time. But hurry.

Keep in mind, though: in-person appointments are only available starting June 1. If you want to file sooner, you can do so online using the “Renta Web” program or by phone—you can request a phone appointment starting in May, by the way. The in-person option is designed for those who aren’t comfortable with digital platforms or have more complex questions.

To schedule an appointment, visit the Tax Agency’s website or call the appointment hotline: 901 22 33 44 or 91 553 00 71. You’ll be asked for your NIE, name, and a contact number. The offices are open Monday through Friday, and I recommend booking your appointment well in advance because slots fill up fast. So don’t wait until the last minute.

A practical tip: review your tax information before you go, especially if you’ve changed your address or had income from abroad. Bring everything: your NIE, your withholding tax certificate from your employer, proof of rent or mortgage payments, and any documents supporting tax deductions. If your tax return is straightforward, you might be able to file it online. But if you have any questions, an in-person appointment will save the day. You’ve been warned.
