A ring that sold fake residency certificates to help foreigners obtain legal status has been dismantled in Algeciras

The National Police have arrested five people in Algeciras (Cádiz) for running a lucrative business based on false residency registrations. Ucrif, the unit that investigates illegal immigration networks, discovered that they were offering foreigners the chance to be listed as residents at addresses they had never even set foot in. In exchange, of course, they charged a fee.

The whole thing came to light in April, when two homeowners in Algeciras realized that people they didn’t know were listed on the municipal resident registry. They filed a complaint. And officers verified that, between the two homes, there were eight people registered who had never lived there. The alleged ringleader recruited immigrants eager to regularize their status and, in exchange for a fee, arranged for them to be registered at those addresses.

Of course, the residency certificates obtained fraudulently were later used in applications for residence and work permits. In other words, they were used to make it appear as though the immigrants had met the requirement of having lived in Spain for a certain period of time, when in fact they had not. The police are investigating charges of document forgery and aiding and abetting irregular immigration. The five detainees have already been brought before a judge.

So, if you’re in Spain and someone offers to register you at an address that isn’t yours, think twice. Not only is it illegal, but you also risk deportation proceedings or having the documents you obtain through this method invalidated. There are legal ways to regularize your status, even if they’re sometimes slow and full of obstacles. Take action, but do it the legal way.

Warning: the municipal registry is an administrative record that reflects your actual place of residence. Falsifying it is a crime, and the consequences for you as an immigrant can be serious. It’s best to contact your local city hall’s social services or an NGO specializing in immigration issues. They’ll guide you without putting your status at risk. Now you know.
