If you live in Burgos and need to register with the local census, get ready to wake up early. The City Council has decided not to implement an appointment system for the municipal census. Every day, queues form as early as five in the morning. More than 150 people pass through the Statistics Service daily, according to spokesperson Andrea Ballesteros.
The reason for this avalanche is the extraordinary regularization process for immigrants approved by the central government. To qualify, foreigners must prove they are registered with the census. This has skyrocketed demand in Burgos, but also in other immigration offices and Post Office branches across Spain. According to the City Council, the situation is exceptional and stems from a state decision.
Ballesteros explained that the number of people attended would decrease if an appointment system were introduced, but the governing team rules it out because they believe it would worsen the problem. Instead, they are looking to set up spaces where citizens can wait in better conditions. The goal is to avoid queues on public streets before nine in the morning, when the service opens. Meanwhile, users spend hours standing, sometimes in rain or cold.
The City Council is also studying the possibility of reinforcing staff within its means, but insists it is an extraordinary situation. That is why it calls on the central government to adopt measures that facilitate managing this surge in demand. The spokesperson stressed that the pressure on the census is not a local problem, but affects many public services.
The deadline to apply for regularization extends until June. So the pressure on the census will continue for weeks. If you are in this situation, do not wait until the last minute.
