If you’re sorting out your status in Spain and looking at the enrollment figures, there’s some good news. Castilla y León ended July with 4,830 new foreign workers enrolled in Social Security compared to the previous month. That represents a 4.23% increase, more than two percentage points above the national average.
The year-over-year figure is even more striking. Over the past twelve months, the region has added 17,332 foreign enrollees, a 17.04% increase. Thus, the total now stands at 119,021. The extraordinary regularization of immigrants has driven these figures, and the effect is particularly noticeable in provinces such as León, Burgos, and Valladolid, which are growing at a rate above the national average. Only Soria lags slightly behind, though it is also seeing an increase.
What does this mean in practice? More people with work permits who are paying into the system. 89.5% of members are enrolled in the General Social Security System, with a particularly high concentration in hospitality (16.3%), manufacturing (12.6%), retail, and construction. The number of foreign self-employed workers is also rising: there are now 12,458, accounting for 10.5% of the total.
By nationality, Colombians top the list with 16,763 members, followed by Moroccans (14,908), Romanians (13,996), Venezuelans (11,988), and Bulgarians (9,388). If you have an application pending, this data can help you identify which sectors are hiring the most.
A comparison with other autonomous communities places Castilla y León in sixth place, both in relative and absolute terms. Asturias, Extremadura, and Galicia are growing more in percentage terms, but Castilla y León remains above the national average. Across Spain as a whole, the number of foreign residents registered with Social Security continues to rise, and in July it fell in only four autonomous communities.
