CCOO Criticizes the Delays in the Regularization of Immigrants in Murcia

Are you waiting for a response to your application for regularization in Murcia? Well, get ready to be very patient. The Comisiones Obreras labor union has raised a huge outcry: of the 440 cases the union has filed in the region, not a single final decision has been issued. And of the more than 7,000 applications it handles throughout Spain, barely 30 have been approved.

But the problem doesn’t end there. Three out of every four applications are still waiting to be accepted for processing—that first step that allows you to work on a provisional basis while your case is being reviewed. According to CCOO, only about a hundred notices of acceptance have been issued, so the vast majority of people remain in limbo. The union assumes the process will drag on until at least the end of the year.

And here’s the worst part: if the decision takes more than a year, the first applicants will have to resubmit all their documentation because the deadlines will have expired. It’s a bureaucratic loophole that can trap you. María Dolores González, CCOO’s organizational secretary, explains that the union’s offices did not close in August because electronic admission notifications require payment of fees within ten days—a deadline that cannot be extended. On top of that, some people have changed their phone numbers or email addresses, and there’s no way to reach them.

If you find yourself in this situation, keep in mind that a lack of response doesn’t mean there’s a problem with your application. The system is simply overwhelmed. What you can do is keep your contact information up to date and keep an eye out for electronic notifications. If you don’t know the status of your application, contact your union or an immigrant assistance organization. Don’t sit idly by, because the deadlines for paying fees won’t wait. Take action.
