Collapse in Social Security and SEPE: How to Get an Appointment Without Going Crazy

So you need an appointment at the Social Security or the SEPE and you find that there are no slots even for September. Yes, the system is collapsed —and it's no joke—. Unions and officials have been denouncing it for weeks, and the problem is not minor: we are talking about pensions, unemployment benefits and other procedures that cannot wait another day.

The collapse is noticeable throughout Spain, but in cities like Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia it is a real ordeal. Users fight over appointments from early in the morning, and many end up waiting weeks, or even months. If you are a foreigner, things get even uglier: any delay in renewing the 'TIE' or registering with Social Security can leave you in administrative limbo.

What can you do if you need an urgent appointment? First, try to request it early in the morning —when they release new slots—. Use the app or the website, and if you find nothing, try calling the appointment hotline. However: do not trust those managers who promise you an appointment for money, they are usually scams.

The unions ask the Government to hire more staff and to set up an emergency channel. For now, the official recommendation is to plan ahead. So if you are processing your residency or a work permit, do not leave it until the last moment.

Things do not look good in the short term. In the meantime, patience and perseverance —your best allies—. But if the collapse prevents you from doing an essential procedure, do not sit idly by.
