Well, the application period for the special regularization process is now open. It began on April 16 and ends on June 30. So if you meet the requirements, this is your chance: you’ll receive a residence and work permit valid for one year throughout Spain. Act fast—time is running out.
Who is eligible to apply?
The Royal Decree of the Council of Ministers covers two cases. The first is for those who have been in Spain for some time but are undocumented. The second is for those who have applied for international protection and are awaiting a response. In both cases, you’ll need to prove your ties to Spain with the appropriate documents. So be careful—not just anything will do.
Two ways to submit your application
You can do it online—24/7 throughout the application period—or in person, but you’ll need an appointment. You can include your entire household in a single appointment. Notifications will be sent via the channel you choose, so make sure to provide a real phone number and email address, okay?
Key documentation
Everyone needs documents proving who you are and your situation. Documents with a name and date, of course. If you’re not applying for international protection, you’ll have to prove that you entered the country before a specific date, or that you have family here, or that you’ve been registered as a resident for at least some time. The supporting documents must be originals or certified copies. No simple photocopies.
As soon as you submit your application, UTEX will send you a notice that the process has begun. That document already allows you to work—in any sector and throughout Spain. Plus, you’ll be assigned a Social Security number and will be entitled to public healthcare. Not bad, huh?
And then, the TIE
If you get the green light, you have one month to apply for the 'TIE' at the National Police. The initial permit is valid for one year; after that, you must transition to the standard categories under the Immigration Regulations. And note: this authorization is only valid for Spain, not for other EU countries. So now you know.
You don’t need to do any more paperwork. If you have questions or want some help, look for organizations listed in the Registry of Immigration Supporters, which offer free assistance. Take advantage of them.
