The window for submitting applications for extraordinary regularization is now open. Starting Monday, April 20, applications can be submitted in person; the online application process began on April 16. The deadline is June 30, 2026. The Council of Ministers gave the green light to the process on April 14.
Given this situation, the Barcelona Bar Association (ICAB) is once again emphasizing a point it has been reiterating for weeks: anyone filing paperwork as part of this process should consult an attorney specializing in immigration law. This is not just any ordinary procedure. The bar association’s president, Cristina Vallejo, maintains that only immigration attorneys have the training to ensure legal certainty in the case, and she points out that attorneys are bound by ethical standards and carry professional liability insurance.
Who does this affect? Migrants who were in Spain before January 1, 2026, and who have remained in the country continuously for five months. The stakes are high: regularization opens the door to living and working for one year in any sector and anywhere in Spain. Quim Clavaguera, head of the ICAB’s Immigration Commission, sums it up this way: the more someone has at stake in their case, the more they need sound legal advice. If you meet the requirements, don’t take chances with unqualified agents or promises of quick results.
The Barcelona Bar Association has been preparing for months. It has strengthened its training in immigration law and offered the General Immigration Course—which grants access to the Legal Aid Program—free of charge, with more than 500 participants enrolled in both in-person and online sessions. Together with the General Council of the Spanish Bar Association, it is finalizing a conference for this April on the approved reform. And regular meetings with the Government Subdelegation have yielded a concrete step forward for day-to-day operations: a pilot program in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat to automate the scheduling of appointments for the Foreigner Identification Card (TIE).
