ICAM Brings Together More Than 500 Lawyers to Discuss Regularization

More than 500 lawyers signed up for the event. There were so many that the Madrid Bar Association (ICAM) had to split the event into two consecutive sessions on the same day. The reason was no small matter: the extraordinary regularization of foreign nationals currently being debated in Parliament, which, sooner or later, will end up on the desks of immigration offices.

The event was organized by the Bar Association’s Immigration Division. Emilio Ramírez, a member of the Governing Board with jurisdiction over the matter, opened the session, followed by Diana Casares, who heads the division. They provided attendees with the most up-to-date information available to the institution, based on meetings held with the relevant authorities. No major announcements: just a practical overview of the direction the changes are taking and how they will affect your daily work if you handle immigration cases.

What does this mean if you’re waiting for regularization?

That nothing has been finalized yet. The regulation is still going through the legislative process, and no final text has been published. Translation for you: be wary of anyone who promises specific dates, exact requirements, or an application deadline that hasn’t yet been published in the Official State Gazette (BOE). And if someone asks you for money to reserve an appointment for a procedure that hasn’t even been approved yet, that’s a red flag.

The Madrid Bar Association also used the meeting as an opportunity to listen. It gathered questions and suggestions from professionals and committed to passing them on to public officials, with the goal of ensuring that the final draft addresses real problems rather than a snapshot in time. In fact, it left the door open to holding new sessions—this time aimed at the general public—to explain the process to those who will experience it firsthand.

While the timeline is still being finalized, there are things you can start doing now:

Consulting with an immigration lawyer before the regulation is published is usually cheaper than fixing the issue later. You know that.
