Immigration Authorities Introduce a 45-Day Extension to Speed Up the Regularization Process

The government has set a 45-day deadline to expedite the processing of applications for extraordinary regularization. The agreement outlining this measure was published this Thursday in the Official State Gazette (BOE) and takes the form of a management mandate between the General Directorate of Migration Management and the General Directorate of the General State Administration in the Territories.

In practical terms: civil servants stationed at immigration offices throughout the country will be able to assist with very specific tasks in the process—such as verifying personal information, entering data into the system, and requesting police or criminal background checks. What really matters to you is that this work can be done regardless of where you filed your application. So your case file could end up being reviewed at an office other than your own.

What Changes and What Doesn’t

Keep in mind that responsibility for the procedure itself does not shift. The Immigration Service retains both its jurisdiction and the substantive aspects of its duties; what is being distributed is the practical and technical work. And those who join this initiative will do so voluntarily, outside the scope of their regular duties. It’s not meant to be an extra burden on top of their regular duties.

There’s funding behind this, of course. The Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration will transfer the necessary funds—with prior authorization from the Treasury—to pay productivity bonuses to the staff involved. And to monitor how everything is progressing and how these funds are being disbursed, a joint monitoring committee has been established. It will dissolve automatically after 45 days.

If you have an application in progress, pay close attention to exactly what will be scrutinized. Verify that the personal identification details in your file match those on your passport and that there are no data entry errors. These are the kinds of mistakes that can delay your application for weeks. And keep in mind that this additional staff has an expiration date. Take advantage of the extra help, because starting on day 46, the processing pace will once again depend on the usual staffing levels.
