Immigration: The Business That Attracts Law Firms

Law firms have spotted a gold mine and aren’t letting go: immigration law. And it’s no wonder, because every year thousands of people enter Spain who need to apply for permits, renewals, or file appeals. The market is enormous, and lawyers are well aware of it.

The demand is relentless: appointments fill up quickly, cases drag on forever, and regulations change without warning. Faced with this bottleneck, many prefer to pay a lawyer to guide them and help them avoid mistakes. Such high demand has turned a service that was once niche into a gold mine. There are already law firms that advertise exclusively for immigration services on their websites.

Is this a good thing? It depends. More competition among lawyers can lower prices and improve service, but it also attracts opportunists who promise the moon and the stars. If you’re in the middle of the process, don’t trust anyone who guarantees paperwork or timelines that no one can control. Ask for references, compare quotes, and make sure the lawyer is accredited by the professional bar association. You know the drill.

Immigration law is a maze. A good lawyer can save you from unpleasant surprises, but they can’t work miracles: deadlines are set by the government, not by the lawyer charging you. So, if someone assures you they can cut in line, be wary. Typically, they’ll help you submit your documentation correctly, appeal a denial, or demonstrate your ties to the country. That costs money, yes, but it’s done transparently. You’ve been warned.

If you’ve been waiting a long time for an appointment or have gotten lost in the paperwork, you might need professional help. Not every case requires a lawyer, but when it does, it’s better to have someone who knows the ins and outs of the system. Think about whether it’s worth it for you.
