Income tax ends on June 30: keys for foreigners in Spain

If you live in Spain and have income, take note: the tax filing season ends on June 30. The tax authorities have already refunded more than 5.7 billion euros to over 8 million taxpayers, but you still have time to file your return. Keep in mind, the filing period began on April 8 for 2025 income, and you’ve been able to request assistance by phone since May 6.

Who has to file?

Well, here’s the deal: foreign residents who are tax residents in Spain—meaning they spend more than 183 days a year here—must report their worldwide income if it exceeds certain thresholds. This also applies to those earning more than 22,000 euros a year from a single employer, or 14,000 euros if you have more than one. If you’re unsure, review your situation.

How and when to make an appointment

In-person appointments at tax offices began on June 1. You can book them through the Tax Agency’s online portal or its app. Keep in mind, though, that the last day to book an appointment is June 29. You can also file your return online using your digital certificate, Cl@ve mobile, or reference number. And if you owe money and want to set up automatic payment, hurry: you have until June 25.

What to check in the draft

The Tax Agency prepares a draft return with your tax information. Review it carefully before confirming—an error in your address or undeclared income can result in fines. If you see anything unusual, correct it. And remember: the income is from 2025, but it’s reported now because income tax filing is done on a delayed basis.

If you’re eligible for deductions—for rent, large families, whatever—you’ll get a refund. If not, you’ll have to pay. In any case, don’t wait until the last minute, or you’ll end up rushing.
