If you’ve tried to renew your residence permit or make an appointment at the immigration office lately, you already know that the paperwork is a maze. Well, that’s exactly where a lot of law firms have spotted a gold mine. The immigration business is booming—and I’m not talking about the small, traditional law firms, but rather a wave of lawyers who want their piece of the pie.
So what does this cost you? Well, it depends. On the one hand, so many options can drive prices down because there’s more competition. But you also run the risk of running into unscrupulous professionals who promise the impossible or charge you for things you could do yourself. The line between good legal advice and a scam is thinner than you think.
So here’s my advice: before signing anything, ask exactly what they’ve done for you. Don’t settle for an “we’ll let you know.” Insist that they explain every step, give you copies of the legal documents, and tell you the actual deadlines. If something doesn’t feel right, be wary. Your immigration status is too important to leave in the hands of an amateur.
And keep in mind, you don’t always need a lawyer. For basic procedures, like renewing your TIE or requesting a certificate, you can do it yourself through the online portal. The law protects you, and the official guides are reliable. Only when things get complicated—deportations, travel bans, appeals—is it worth paying an expert.
The surge in lawyers in this sector isn’t bad in itself, but it does require you to stay vigilant. Compare options, ask questions, and above all, don’t hand over money upfront without seeing results. When it comes to immigration matters, patience and caution are your best friends.
