Marrying a Spaniard doesn’t spare you from bureaucracy—far from it. In fact, you may have to wait months—and months—for your right to legally reside to be recognized. This isn’t an isolated case: many applications get lost in an administrative drawer, with no response.
The process of regularizing your status through marriage requires submitting an application for residency as a family member of an EU citizen. You have to provide your marriage certificate, proof of registration with the municipal registry, a criminal record check… and then you just have to wait. Administrative silence becomes the norm. There’s no set deadline to meet; every month that passes without any news puts you in a bind: no job, no social security, and no ability to travel.
Meanwhile, your life remains on hold. You can try to check the status of your case online—provided you have your identification number. Sometimes the website gives generic responses that don’t clarify anything at all. If you’re lucky, you’ll get an appointment at the immigration office to ask questions, but you know how those appointments go: a real headache. Don’t despair: it’s normal for the system to be overwhelmed, but that doesn’t mean you should stop pushing.
If months go by and there’s no way to move forward, seek advice. An immigration lawyer can send a formal letter to get a response. You can also file a complaint if you believe the lack of response is unjustified. But be careful: don’t abandon your application or let your documents expire. Renew your documents if necessary and keep copies of everything, because you never know when they’ll ask for them.
This backlog affects real couples—people who have gotten married, who want to start a family here, and who are seeing the government fail to respond. There are no magic shortcuts or special connections; just patience and following the official channels. That said, if the delay is causing you serious harm, take action quickly—don’t just sit idly by.
