If you need the certificate for the public transport card in Madrid, get ready to wait. The office in charge of issuing it is completely overwhelmed. On its website, not a single appointment appears available before May 31. Dozens of people who have been trying to process the document for weeks are denouncing this.
The problem particularly affects those who have just arrived in the city or need to renew their pass. For foreigners, this certificate is often a requirement to obtain discounts or prove residency. Without it, many are left unable to travel by metro or bus with a reduced fare.
What can you do if you find yourself in this situation? The office's website offers no other option than to wait for new dates to be released. Some users recommend trying early in the morning, when they usually post the few remaining slots. Others choose to go in person to the office, although there they refer you back to the online system.
The Department of Transport has not issued an official statement about the backlog. Meanwhile, demand continues to grow: more requests arrive every day from people who need the document to work or study. The situation is reminiscent of other bureaucratic meltdowns in the Community of Madrid, such as those for immigration appointments.
If you are waiting, you have no choice but to arm yourself with patience. But be sure to check the website often because canceled appointments are released without prior notice. And if your case is urgent, you can try to explain it in writing through the suggestion box, although there is no guarantee of a quick response.
