If you're a foreigner living in Madrid, don't miss out: City Hall opens the window to schedule an in-person appointment for the 2025 Income Tax return this Friday, May 29. They've been offering phone support for a month now—that's true—but now it's time to head to the office if you'd prefer in-person assistance.

So how do you make an appointment? You can do it by phone, on the Madrid Tax Agency (ATM) website, or directly at their offices. The deadline—I’ll tell you now—ends on June 29. So don’t wait too long, because there are limits and conditions.

The first thing you need to be clear on: if your tax return shows a balance due, you can only set up a direct debit with your bank if you file it with municipal assistance. And take note: you must set up the direct debit before June 25. If you plan to pay after that date—or by card, bank transfer, etc.—then you’ll have to file the return yourself, even if the tax professionals helped you prepare it.

And are you required to file? The tax authorities require you to do so if you’ve earned more than 22,000 euros from a single employer, or more than 15,000 euros from two or more. Also if you have income from real estate, investment income, or capital gains subject to withholding tax. That said, there are special cases: real estate attributions, public aid, prizes… it’s best to check before you get confused.

If you live in the Community of Madrid, there are regional tax deductions that might interest you: for renting your primary residence, for educational expenses, for large families… Make sure to check the details because you could save a few euros.
