Nearly 2,000 people already have their TIE: the review of the regularization process begins

The extraordinary regularization process is now underway. On the first day of reviews, nearly 2,000 people received approval. Of those, 1,813 already have their “TIE” in hand—the document certifying their new legal status in Spain. So for them, the process is complete.

This first batch is for those who met the two basic requirements: living here before December 31, 2025, and having no criminal record. The ‘TIE’ you receive is valid for one year and is renewable for up to four years. After that, you can apply for citizenship. So these individuals can now work without any problems.

For everyone else, the wait begins now. The government has given itself three months to review the 1.3 million applications. Police sources say they want to “step on the gas,” but the workload is enormous. The immigration units, already overwhelmed, have been inundated with applications. In fact, since July 1, the police have launched an emergency plan to bolster their staff. So don’t expect a quick response.

If you’ve submitted your application, be prepared for surprises. Officers may ask you for an interview or contact your embassy to verify your information. Don’t get complacent: if something doesn’t add up, they’ll call you. And watch out for forgeries: the police have already dismantled networks that were producing fake documents, especially from Pakistan. The “pull effect” that the unions warned about has materialized, and criminal gangs have tried to sneak people in with fraudulent documents. So proceed with caution.

That said, the legal process could complicate everything. The Supreme Court has asked the Court of Justice of the European Union whether this regularization conflicts with EU regulations, particularly the Schengen Agreement. If the CJEU rules that it’s not compatible, the entire process could come to a standstill. For now, Valencia and Aragón have already filed appeals. So there’s uncertainty.

In the meantime, if you’re an applicant, check your email and the status of your case. Official information is updated on the Ministry’s website. And if something doesn’t add up, don’t stay silent. You know the drill.
