The National Police have dismantled a criminal organization that was involved in facilitating the legalization of migrants in Spain through document forgery. The Ministry of the Interior has confirmed the operation, though it has not provided details on the number of people arrested or the cities where the raids took place. What has come to light is that the network sold legal residency to foreigners who did not meet the requirements.
These types of police raids don’t always make the headlines. But when they do, it’s worth paying attention. Because behind every arrest are dozens of people who paid for documents that weren’t valid. People who now face deportation proceedings and will be barred from re-entering Spain for years.
If you’re in the middle of an immigration process, listen to this: no one can speed up the process. Not an agent, not a lawyer, and certainly not a stranger who contacts you on Telegram. Appointments are scheduled through the online portal and are free of charge. If someone charges you for them, or promises to get you a permit in exchange for money, they’re scamming you. And if they also offer you a fake contract or fraudulent residency registration, you’re committing a crime. Being in a hurry doesn’t justify the risk.
Criminal organizations target the most desperate people as their victims. So, if you receive an offer that seems too good to be true, be wary. Consult a trusted lawyer or an organization like the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR), which offers free guidance. It’s better to wait a few months than to risk a three-year entry ban.
Police action is good news, but it’s not enough. As long as there are undocumented people and lengthy procedures, there will be those who try to profit from the situation. The solution lies in tightening controls, but also in streamlining administrative processes and providing clear answers. In the meantime, your best defense is information and patience.
