If you are Colombian and need to renew or get a passport for the first time, as of March 16 you no longer have to request an appointment in Bogotá. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has implemented a direct attention system: you arrive, wait your turn, and process the document that same day. So get moving.
There are two authorized locations: the downtown one at Calle 12C No. 8-27, and the northern one at Avenida 19 No. 98-03. Both are open Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., non-stop. However, don't get confused: each one in its own neighborhood.
The requirements change depending on where you were born. If you are an adult Colombian and were born in the country, you only need the original citizenship ID card. If you were born abroad, in addition to the ID you need the full civil registration —with all marginal notes— and watch out, no photocopies. The process is personal: you cannot send anyone in your place, you have to go yourself.
As for prices, in Bogotá the ordinary passport costs about 190,000 Colombian pesos, the executive one about 323,000, and the emergency one around 192,000. Keep in mind that in other regions of the country costs may rise due to local taxes. So if you can, do it in the capital.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has disseminated this new modality through its digital channels. If you plan to travel soon and your passport is expired, this option may be useful for you — although it involves traveling to the capital. You've been warned.
