If you’re Peruvian and live in Spain, you’ve surely heard stories from family or friends who went crazy trying to get an appointment to renew their passport in Lima. Well, that’s over now. The National Superintendency of Migration has just announced that, starting June 1, you’ll be able to apply for a passport without needing an appointment.
In fact, they’re already testing the system at the Breña office in Lima. There, the process is straightforward: you arrive, pay the fee (120.90 soles, which you can pay at Banco de la Nación or via Yape), and wait. You’ll receive your passport that very same day. No more waiting weeks or months, as was the case before with the online system, which was overloaded and a real headache.
This change addresses the usual problems: appointments that were impossible to get, middlemen selling them illegally, and desperate users. Now, with in-person service without an appointment, the idea is that everything will be faster and simpler. In Breña, during the trial phase, there have been no long lines or crowds.
This change is especially helpful if you live abroad and need to renew your passport when you return to the country. Before, planning the trip was an ordeal because you didn’t know if you’d be able to get an appointment. Now, if your flight is in a few days, you can go directly to the office and get it done. The Immigration Office assures that the system is already running smoothly.
Keep in mind, however, that for now, walk-in service is only available at some offices during the implementation phase. Starting June 1, the measure will be rolled out nationwide. If you plan to travel to Peru soon, make sure to check which offices are using this new system to avoid any surprises. Get moving—this is serious business.
