Peru Breaks Passport Issuance Record After Eliminating the Appointment Requirement

In June, Peru’s Immigration Service issued 88,793 e-passports, the highest number in its history. The reason? As of June 1, the online appointment system was discontinued. So now you can go directly to the offices, take a number, and wait on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority is given to seniors, pregnant women, and people with children.

Two locations saw the highest volume of visitors: Surco (Jockey Plaza) with 14,328 passports, and Breña with 13,820. In just three weeks, more than 68,000 people were served. The goal is to simplify access to the electronic passport, the document you need if you want to travel abroad from Peru.

Superintendent Juan Ramiro Alvarado Gómez explained that the decision was made after listening to the public. It also aims to curb illegal brokers. Immigration authorities identified at least 30 companies and individuals selling appointment slots, particularly in Breña. “There will be no more appointment-based processing,” he said. “They will no longer be able to take advantage of citizens.”

But be warned: the process doesn’t end when you get your passport. There are 3,244 unclaimed passports at various offices. Most are in Surco (918) and Breña (673). The law gives you 60 days to pick it up after your biometric data is collected. If you miss the deadline, the passport is canceled and destroyed. Then you’d have to pay the 120.90 soles (about 30 euros) again and repeat the entire process. So don’t let it slip your mind.

To apply for the passport, you’ll need your valid national ID (DNI) and proof of payment. You can pay at agencies, via Yape, at a POS terminal, or through Págalo.pe from Banco de la Nación (code 01810). If you’re a Peruvian living in Spain and plan to travel to Peru, keep these changes in mind. Getting an appointment is no longer a problem, but picking up your passport is. So make sure to pick it up on time.
