The Government has opened a temporary process so you can regularize your situation. Yes, you read correctly: around 500,000 people across Spain could benefit. In Barcelona alone, at least 24,000. So if you have been without papers for a while, this could be your moment. It is not an opportunity that comes often.
The key is to present the correct documentation. You will need a passport, a certificate of registration with the municipal census, and above all, the famous vulnerability certificate issued by social services. That document proves you are at social or economic risk. Without it, there is no process. However: if you are an applicant for international protection or a minor, the requirements change. Check the website of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration for the full list — it is available in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Arabic, Urdu, and Chinese.
And how do you get that certificate? If you are already being assisted by social services, you will receive an SMS or an email with a link to download it. The process may take a few minutes. If you see errors, call 900 922 357 or go to your reference center. If you have no prior contact, you will need to request an appointment. In Barcelona, you can go to the OACs of Sant Miquel or Monumental, to the SAIER, or to the center at 24 Miquel Bleach street. In addition, they have enabled Pavilion 2 of Fira de Barcelona, at Avinguda Rius i Taulet, to distribute tickets for prior appointments. It is open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Monday to Friday. There they provide general information and, if you are a resident of the city but do not have a municipal census registration, they will also assist you starting next week.
The Barcelona City Council organizes information sessions in different neighborhoods, in the morning and afternoon. Interested? Call 93 153 28 15 or request an appointment at the SAIER. And beware: in-person appointments are free. Do not let anyone charge you for an appointment. Distrust managers who ask you for money just to reserve one.
You can submit the application online, through the Ministry's electronic office, or in person at the designated points. So do not miss the deadline. This process is extraordinary and it is unknown if it will be repeated. Act now.
