The government has just given the green light to an extraordinary regularization for migrants already living in Spain. Note, it is not an amnesty nor a process open to just anyone: it is aimed at those who have been in the country for a while but without papers. Are you one of them?
The plan —still to be developed— will allow some foreigners to obtain a residence and work permit without the normal procedures. I insist: it is for those already here, not for those who want to come. The idea is to reduce the underground economy and provide legal coverage to people who are already part of society.
Who can benefit?
The measure is for migrants who can demonstrate a long stay in Spain —usually at least two years— and who have a work contract or are about to have one. Family ties or social roots also count. The specific details will be published by the Ministry of Inclusion in the coming months, so it's better to stay tuned.
If you think you meet the requirements, start gathering documents now: passport, certificate of registration, any proof that you have been here —rental contracts, bills, medical reports—. Don't wait for the BOE to be published; bureaucracy needs patience and papers, lots of papers.
However, the regularization is not automatic. You will have to submit an application and probably request an appointment at the immigration office of your province. And appointments go fast, so hurry: get up early on the website or ask for help from migrant associations.
