Regularization applications already double the Government's forecasts.

This Tuesday, June 30, is the deadline to request the extraordinary regularization. And the figures have skyrocketed: according to police sources, requests are already approaching 1.3 million, more than double the 500,000 the Government initially estimated.

Until April, Sánchez's government repeated that the measure would help half a million immigrants already settled in Spain. Well, no. The current data proves the General Commissariat of Immigration and Borders right, which already warned in an internal report that the process would exceed one million. That document —as controversial as they come— also warned that public services (health, education) could become saturated and that there would be social tensions.

The Unified Police Union (SUP) recalls that they already said it: their forecasts, made with immigration specialists, were the correct ones. Now, the big part comes after the deadline: the Police have to issue foreign identity cards, take fingerprints, and sort out messes. A bureaucratic burden that, according to the SUP, may be even more complicated than collecting applications.

With the fear that many will be left out due to lack of time, the 'Regularización Ya' movement has introduced a non-legislative proposal in Congress to extend the deadline. The initiative is supported by Podemos, Sumar, EH Bildu, ERC and BNG. Minister Elma Saiz, however, has said that this is not a final point and that there will be time to take stock.

If you have not yet submitted your application, verify that you meet the requirements and go to the nearest Immigration office before they close the windows. Do not let the last day pass, because there is no extension afterwards.
