The 2025-2026 tax return is just around the corner. The exact dates have not been published yet, but as always, the campaign starts in April and ends in late June. So you can start preparing your documents.
If you live in Spain with your NIE and have worked, received a benefit, rented a home or had income of more than 22,000 euros per year, you will most likely have to file it. Also if you have been in the country for less than 183 days but have generated income here. Watch out, that also counts.
An appointment with Hacienda can be requested shortly through their website, the mobile app or by phone. The system is the same as always: you choose whether you want telephone assistance, in-person assistance or an appointment to help you file your tax return. But don't wait until the last minute, appointments fill up fast. So hurry up.
What do you need to have on hand? Well this:
- Your NIE or DNI
- The tax data that the company or Social Security has sent you
- Proof of withholdings, deductions or installment payments
- If you have children or dependents, their data too
And double check that no income is missing, especially if you have been self-employed or have had rentals. Don't risk it.
A tip: if you are filing your tax return for the first time or have doubts about your tax situation, make an appointment to get a helping hand. Don't trust online simulators without checking. Hacienda offers free telephone and in-person assistance. That said, make sure the appointment is with enough time so you don't have to rush. Stay calm, but get moving.
Be clear: the filing deadline is not extended. If you don't file when you are required to, you risk fines. So you better get up to date as soon as possible. You already know.
