Imagine: 25 days calling and not a single voice on the other end. Or you go to the website and find no appointments — not in your city, nor in the entire region. It's not a one-day glitch: the Social Security is overwhelmed, and those who suffer most are those trying to retire.
Rosa and her husband, 66 years old, need the pension documents. They've tried everything: internet, telephone, everything. Nothing. So in the end they show up at an office, even though they know that without an appointment they only handle emergencies. They are told they will be called. They leave wondering if the phone will ring.
Carmen is retiring in May. She has been calling and checking the website for over 25 days. She can't do it alone — she needs her daughter for the digital part — but even then: there are no free appointments in her postal code or in the entire Community of Madrid. She herself says: “I don't understand what's happening.” And this story repeats with more foreigners requesting contributory or non-contributory pensions. Because the same problems are faced by anyone who needs to process a procedure with Social Security.
If you are over 65 and don't handle the internet, things get complicated. Esther, 70 years old, tried a thousand times by phone: “I call and call and no one picks up.” So she went to the office to see if they could give her a hand. She hopes for a solution, but no one guarantees it. The worst part is that remote assistance remains a wall for those who weren't born with a mobile phone in hand.
What can you do if you find yourself in this situation? Well first, don't give up: keep trying the website and phone during quiet hours — very early or late afternoon. Ask a family member or friend for help with the digital part. If there are no appointments in your province, take a look in neighboring provinces: sometimes there are slots. And if you need something urgent, like a digital certificate, ask if they can see you without an appointment. Get moving.
The problem is not only for retirees. Those processing residency or the NIE also run into full calendars and phones that don't answer. Impatience is a bad advisor, but the wait can stretch for weeks. The important thing is to keep insisting and have all documents ready for when you get an appointment. You already know.
