The government does not clarify the cost of the mass regularization.

The deadline to regularize foreigners closed in April. But the Government still hasn't clarified how much all this will cost. According to official data, between 1.2 and 1.3 million applications have been received, far more than the 500,000 expected. The problem? That the Executive has not specified the total cost of the plan.

The Council of State already warned in its April report: it was a 'striking gap'. The regulatory impact memorandum analyzed the social consequences but left the budget 'under study'. Two months later, the Government has announced an initial allocation of 505 million euros for 2026, without specifying how much will be spent until 2030. Official sources say that scenarios of 500,000, 750,000 and one million people have been considered, but the final figure will come when the process ends.

Of those 505 million, 40% – about 200 million – will go to public services such as health, education and housing. Exactly the ones that suffer the most pressure from the arrival of new residents. The Government argues that regularization will not skyrocket demand because many already live here and use these services, but it will be the autonomous communities that have to manage day-to-day operations. However, an interministerial commission will be created to distribute the money.

And what if you are in the middle of this process? The truth is that uncertainty is high. If you have submitted your application, stay alert to deadlines. The immigration offices are overwhelmed and resources are limited. Don't rely only on rumors: always check the Ministry's electronic headquarters or ask your lawyer. And if you see that your appointment is delayed or you lose track of your file, don't stay idle.
