The government itself has acknowledged this in writing. At a meeting with the Madrid Bar Association (ICAM), immigration officials admitted that the extraordinary regularization process would have been extremely complicated without the work of attorneys. In other words: this process doesn’t happen on its own, even with good will.
The message really hits home if you’re in the thick of it. We’re talking about a process with forms, requirements, and deadlines that aren’t always explained clearly. A poorly submitted form, a missed deadline, or an untranslated document can leave you out of the running. Lawyers aren’t just there for show: they review your case file, identify what’s missing, and organize your documentation before the government scrutinizes it.
What does this mean for you?
If you’re preparing your legalization application, don’t wait until the last minute. Gather your documents well in advance, make sure the information matches up, and don’t rely on what an acquaintance who “had a good experience” told you. Every case is unique: length of stay, family ties, roots in the community, and background. What worked for your neighbor may not necessarily apply to your case.
And be careful with shortcuts. Anyone who promises results without knowing your situation—or asks for money up front without explaining anything—is a risk you don’t need to take. If you can’t afford a law firm, ask the bar association in your province about guidance services or pro bono assistance. These services exist, even though almost no one tells you about them when you start the process.
The Immigration Office’s recognition by the ICAM is no minor detail either. It puts into writing what many already suspected: that the work of attorneys has been key to ensuring that thousands of cases were successfully resolved. Without legal advice, the process becomes much more of an uphill battle. And when it comes to paperwork, an uphill battle usually means months lost.
So if you have any questions, clear them up before submitting anything. Seeking advice early on is cheaper than correcting a mistake later. The government doesn’t always give second chances, and in immigration matters, every procedure handled incorrectly is a problem you’ll have to deal with down the line.
