The Police warns: regularization will reach three million when family reunifications are added.

According to National Police calculations, the extraordinary regularization launched by the Government could leave three million people in a legal situation in Spain. Note that the figure includes not only the 1.2 million initial applicants, but also their families — who would arrive through family reunification. And Immigration officials have already made it clear: the system could collapse.

The discomfort within the Police is more than evident. They feel that Migraciones has left them out of the control of the procedures — which is their legal responsibility. Internal sources say that the Police will limit themselves to stamping the cards that the ministry has already validated. Without being able to verify documentation or criminal records. That, they say, weakens the security of the process.

The procedure has gotten out of hand: the Government expected half a million applications, but more than double have arrived. And this is not new: the General Commissariat of Immigration already warned in an internal report — almost two years ago — that the need was known and that the 'urgency' was debatable. They also warned of a possible pull effect and that public services would become saturated.

What worries most is family reunification. For each person who regularizes, up to three family members can arrive, according to the Police. And that, of course, opens the door to fraud: paying someone to pose as a son or father. Agents have already detected some cases, although they say they catch them quickly because in those nuclei there are very few real applicants.

If you are in the regularization process, you must be very attentive to the deadlines and the documentation they ask for. The Police will only appear at the end — to stamp it. Any problem or delay will come from the ministry's management. So you know: do not trust intermediaries who promise to speed up the procedures. The mafias are on the prowl.
