The July Social Security enrollment and unemployment figures have already been interpreted by the unions. And the UGT is clear on this: these figures show that the process of regularizing the status of foreign nationals was essential. Far from putting pressure on the labor market, the union maintains that it has brought to light jobs that already existed and granted rights to hundreds of thousands of people who were already working and living here.
But they don’t stop there. The organization is calling for further reforms to strengthen a high-quality labor market. Its first demand is to change the rules governing dismissals. They want to ensure effective protection against unfair dismissal by bringing Spanish law into line with the European Social Charter. This means that anyone dismissed without just cause should receive appropriate compensation.
The next issue is wages. UGT insists that purchasing power must be restored, and to that end, they are urging the opening of negotiations for the Sixth Agreement on Employment and Collective Bargaining (AENC). Their proposal: a minimum annual increase of 4% for 2026–2028. And if your collective bargaining agreement includes wages below the average, they are asking for an additional increase of 1% to 3%.
Inflation is also a concern for them. It has risen above the forecast used to set the 2026 minimum wage. For this reason, they are demanding that the SMI amount be revised. They are relying on Article 27 of the Workers’ Statute and are calling for the social dialogue committee to be convened as soon as possible.
