Warning: Regularization Could Lead to 5 Million Family Reunifications

The fact that the extraordinary regularization process opens the door to family reunification is no small matter. It could increase the number of people arriving in Spain fivefold. The numbers speak for themselves: nearly 1.2 million applications have been filed. Each beneficiary could bring an average of three to five family members. The result: a flood of up to five million new foreign nationals.

Police officials have already sounded the alarm. They fear a collapse in the next twelve months—just as those who have been regularized begin to apply for family reunification. The Jupol union has asked officers to work strictly according to regulations: no overtime and with the utmost rigor. They warn that the process could become a loophole for criminal gangs.

The law is not a blank check. To bring family members over, you must have had your papers in order for one year and have applied to renew them for another year. In addition, you must prove you have adequate housing and a sufficient income. You can only bring your spouse, children, and parents. It does not apply to other relatives.

Meanwhile, the Madrid regional government describes the entire process as chaotic and brands the central government as irresponsible. Telemadrid has not yet received a response from the Ministry of the Interior. So if you’re in the middle of this process, be prepared for delays. Start gathering the required documents now: rental agreement, pay stubs, and employment history. Don’t wait for the flood of applications to hit.
