You can now request the new arraigos from April 16.

Well, from April 16, if you have been in Spain for at least five months, you can apply for regularization thanks to the new Immigration Regulation. The government estimates that the measure will benefit about 500,000 people in an irregular situation. The process starts online on April 16 and in person on April 20.

The regulation creates two new types of roots. The first, for those who requested international protection before January 1, 2026 and are still waiting for a response. The second, the 'extraordinary roots', for any foreigner who arrived in Spain before that same date and proves an uninterrupted stay of five months. However, in both cases you must have no criminal record.

One advantage: from the moment you communicate the start of your application, you can work as an employee or self-employed until they respond. The Administration has three months to give you a response. If it does not, the application will be considered denied by administrative silence. So hurry up: the deadline to submit the application ends on June 30, 2026.

To avoid collapses, the government has mobilized TRAGSA and Correos, which will help with document management and the reception of applications, especially in rural areas. In addition, 450 in-person service offices will be enabled and the staff will be reinforced with more than 600 civil servants. However, the hours for these procedures will be specific so as not to hinder the normal functioning of the Social Security.

In fact, the Executive defends the reform for demographic reasons: Spain needs between 200,000 and 250,000 migrants a year to sustain pensions and the welfare state. The regularization, according to President Sánchez, recognizes rights for those who already live and work in the country, fights the underground economy and improves tax collection. If you meet the requirements, do not wait until the last moment to prepare your documentation.
