You can visit the Social Security office without an appointment in only two cases

If you need to go to a Social Security office, keep in mind that just showing up isn’t enough. Since the pandemic, almost everything requires an appointment. There are only two exceptions: urgent matters and people with special needs. In those cases, you can go without an appointment and will be assisted at the quick-service counters. So now you know.

And what counts as urgent? Well, for example, submitting a document that expires that very same day. Or a question you can’t figure out online and need an answer to right away. Outside of those cases, you’ll be asked to make an appointment. The same goes if you’re applying for a pension, the Minimum Living Income, or any other benefit. Knowing this ahead of time saves you a wasted trip, especially if you have trouble getting around or aren’t very familiar with online procedures. You’ve been warned.

The offices—the CAISS—are open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There, you’ll be seen by appointment for most matters related to the INSS and the Social Institute of the Navy. Bring your DNI or NIE and any necessary documents: medical reports, family register, proof of income. If you bring everything, you won’t have to schedule another appointment weeks later. Get everything ready as soon as possible.

There are two ways to schedule an appointment, and neither requires you to go to the office. By phone, call 91 541 02 91 (for INSS and ISM) or 020 for the Minimum Living Income. Have the application form, your ZIP code, and your DNI or NIE number handy. Online, visit the Social Security website. The system will give you the first available appointment at the nearest office. Keep in mind: the 020 number is free, 901 numbers cost depending on your carrier, and 91 numbers are charged at your standard rate.

Many procedures can now be completed online without leaving home. The “Importass” portal handles enrollment and contributions. “Tu Seguridad Social” lets you view your benefits record. And if you’d rather speak with someone, video assistance is a video call appointment with an official—designed primarily for Treasury-related procedures. If your matter can’t be handled online and isn’t urgent, make an appointment. It’s the only way to be seen right away.
